How to pay less for Christmas lights

The price of a Christmas light display comes down to three choices: how many units you buy at once, whether you buy a kit or the parts, and which spacing you choose. Each one is priced on this page from the current catalog, and shipping is free on all orders, so the listed price is the product cost before tax.

Buy the case when you'll use it

Most products are sold in a small pack and a case. A 500-bulb case of C9 LED bulbs fills 500 ft. of 12 in. socket wire, and a 24-strand case of LED mini lights holds 1,200 lights. When the display is large enough to use a case, the per-unit price is lower on most products. The table below lists the savings product by product, including the few where the case doesn't cost less per unit.

Kit or parts

A C9 installation kit puts the socket wire, bulbs, plugs and clips for a run into one purchase with a choice of bulb colors. Building the same run from a 1,000 ft. socket spool, bulb cases, a clip case and plug packs usually costs less per foot on long runs and leaves spare plugs for next season.

Spacing changes the bulb count

15 in. socket spacing uses about 20% fewer bulbs and clips than 12 in. spacing over the same footage. On a two-story home or a building seen from the street, the wider spacing still reads as a continuous line and lowers the cost of every foot.

LED lowers the running cost

LED C9 and mini lights draw a small fraction of the power of incandescent bulbs, so more lights run on one household circuit and the electric bill for the season stays low. Plastic LED lenses also survive storage and ladders, so fewer bulbs are replaced each year.

Where the case price saves money

Case pricing lowers the per-unit cost on most products, but by very different amounts. Here's each product where the case costs less per unit, ranked by how much:

  • 6 in. LED mini strands: $14.50 per strand in a single, $10.83 per strand in a 24-case, 25% less.
  • C9 LED bulbs: $0.798 per bulb in a 25-pack, $0.638 per bulb in a 500-case, 20% less.
  • 4 in. LED mini strands: $15.00 per strand in a single, $12.29 per strand in a 24-case, 18% less.
  • Male plugs: $0.760 per plug in a 50-pack, $0.699 per plug in a 1,000-case, 8% less.
  • 8 in. light stakes: $0.860 per stake in a 25-pack, $0.800 per stake in a 250-case, 7% less.
  • C9 O-clips: $0.237 per clip in a 100-pack, $0.228 per clip in a 1,000-case, 4% less.
  • Photocell timers: $11.00 per timer in a single, $10.75 per timer in a 4-case, 2% less.

When a case is worth it

A case only saves money if the extra units get used. A few rules of thumb:

  • C9 bulbs: a 500-bulb case fills 500 ft. of 12 in. socket wire or about 625 ft. at 15 in. Below about 16 packs' worth of bulbs (400 bulbs), buying 25-packs costs less in total even though each bulb costs more.
  • Mini strands: a 24-strand case is 1,200 lights, enough for several medium trees. For a few shrubs, single strands cost less overall.
  • Clips and plugs: spares keep for years, so a case can make sense across two or three seasons of repairs and additions.

12 in. vs 15 in. spacing, priced

Spacing is the other big lever. 15 in. spacing needs about 20% fewer bulbs and clips for the same footage:

  • 250 ft.: $435 at 12 in. ($1.74/ft.) vs $425 at 15 in. ($1.70/ft.), a difference of $10.
  • 500 ft.: $935 at 12 in. ($1.87/ft.) vs $823.12 at 15 in. ($1.65/ft.), a difference of $111.88.
  • 1,000 ft.: $1,605.10 at 12 in. ($1.61/ft.) vs $1,299 at 15 in. ($1.30/ft.), a difference of $306.10.

Kit vs parts on a 1,000 ft. run

The 1,000 ft. 12 in. installation kit is $1,605.10. The same run built from a 1,000 ft. socket spool, two 500-bulb cases, a 1,000-count O-clip case and a pack each of male and female plugs comes to $1,216.98, $388.12 less. The parts route takes more assembly: cutting each run, closing plugs and clipping every socket. For long, straight commercial rooflines it's usually worth it; for a single house with several short edges, the kit is simpler.

Costs that aren't on the price tag

Shipping is free on all orders with no minimum, and there are no processing or handling fees, so small top-up orders don't carry a penalty. LED bulbs also cut the electricity cost of running a display compared with incandescent, and a photocell timer keeps the lights off during the hours no one is looking.

Questions

How do I know if a case is worth it?

Divide the case price by the pack price. If you'll use at least that many packs' worth of product this season or next, the case costs less. The guide above does this for C9 bulbs.

Does 15 in. spacing really cost less?

Yes. It uses about 20% fewer bulbs and clips for the same footage, and the 15 in. installation kits are priced lower than the 12 in. kits at the same length. The guide above lists the difference at each size.

Is it cheaper to build a run from a spool?

On a 1,000 ft. run, the spool plus bulb cases, a clip case and plug packs usually costs less than the equivalent kit. The parts table above prices both from the current catalog.

Can I mix colors across a case of bulbs?

A case is one color. For mixed patterns, a C9 installation kit with a pattern option, or separate 25-packs of each color, avoids buying a full case of a color you use sparingly.

Do LED lights save money on electricity?

Yes. LED C9 and mini lights draw a small fraction of the wattage of incandescent bulbs, which lowers the cost of running a display every night of the season.

Will small top-up orders cost more to ship?

No. Shipping is free on all orders with no minimum, so ordering one more pack mid-season costs only the price of the pack.

Is the case always cheaper per unit?

Not always. On most products the case price per unit is lower, but on a few the small pack costs less per unit. The pack vs case table shows each product.

Are there shipping or handling charges?

No. Shipping is free on all orders with no minimum, and there are no handling or processing fees at checkout.

How many bulbs do I need for a roofline?

Convert the run length to inches and divide by the socket spacing. A 100 ft. roofline is 1,200 in.; at 12 in. spacing that's 100 sockets and 100 bulbs, and at 15 in. spacing it's 80.

Should I choose 12 in. or 15 in. spacing?

12 in. spacing gives a tighter, brighter line and is common on single-story homes and anything viewed up close. 15 in. spacing uses about 20% fewer bulbs for the same footage and is common on larger homes and commercial rooflines viewed from a distance.

What's in a C9 installation kit?

Kits combine C9 socket wire at the listed length and spacing with LED C9 bulbs to fill the sockets, slide-on plugs to finish the runs and clips to mount them. The options list on each kit shows the bulb colors and clip mix available.

What are sun warm, warm, pure and cool white?

They describe color temperature. Sun warm white (about 2600–2800K) is the most amber, closest to incandescent. Warm white (about 2800–3200K) is the traditional soft white. Pure white (about 4000–4200K) is neutral, and cool white (5900K and up) has a blue tint.

Can I return items I don't use?

Yes. Unused, uninstalled product in its original, intact packaging can be returned within 30 days of delivery. Request the return before shipping anything back.
